Br. Francis (Clement Lai), CSJB

I was born in Toronto and my parents brought me to Hong Kong when l was 2 months old. I grew up there until I was 17 when I moved to Toronto to continue my schoolings. | had never grown up with faith although I went to a Protestant high school until Grade 11. My grandparents and relatives have always gone to the Chinese Martyrs Catholic Church (CMCC) in Markham for all these years but I only went with them occasionally during the important feast days. Strangely enough, I was not influenced by my grandma who was a devoted Catholic at that time to be converted. I was not baptized as a baby because my dad who has no religion wanted to let me decide on my own when I grew up. God’s plan is really unimaginable and amazing as I was indeed baptized when I was 31 years old.

It was in 2008 when my aunt from U.S and mom’s reunion in Canada who invited me to go to a church. Therefore, I went to a Protestant Church near my rented home at that time so to meet more friends. I went there for 9 months where the pastor invited me to be baptized. However, my other aunt from Toronto who has been going to CMCC invited me to go to the Catholic Church that she goes. I then started going to CMCC with my grandparents in May 2009 and eventually registered for the CIA class in September of 2009. I enjoyed every moment of it so much that I didn’t want to miss a single class. Just a couple of weeks before my baptism, I went online and researched my chosen baptised name “Clement”. To my unimaginable surprise, I found out St Clement’s feast day falls on my birthday. Immediately l asked my mom but she didn’t pick my name at that time by looking at the church’s calendar. Ever since that day, I feel the true and real presence of the Lord in this universe. As a result, my favorite bible verse is as follows.

“Hear me, coastlands, listen, distant peoples. Before birth the LORD called me, from my mother’s womb he gave me my name”. (Isaiah 49:1)

I can truly testify to it since God was the one who gave me this name “Clement”.

After 18 months of RCIA, I was eventually baptized and confirmed on April 23rd, 2011 at the beautiful Easter Vigil Mass at CMCC. At times throughout my life and especially after my baptism, I’ve always wondered what the meaning of life is and if there is a greater purpose of life for me other than working from a 9-5 daily job for the rest of my life.

In November of 2013, a parishioner invited me to be a chaperone to help bring youths for 1 week to the Legionaries of Christ Test Your Call Retreat” in Cheshire, USA. I always had the curiosity about seminary lite and therefore I accepted the invitation to help. That was my first-time experience of living in a seminary with seminarians and following their daily routines. It was an eye-opening experience. After the retreat, I figured out a religious order but other priests have also recommended me to check out the diocesan priesthood in order to make comparisons to continue my discernment.
